CZ AMA - Sept 23 - Full Transcript
AI Summary
This is the AI transcript of "CZ AMA - Sept 23". Want to listen while reading?
Hi everyone, thanks for joining.
CZ will be here in a minute.
As usual, just a reminder, we're going to have CZ for about 30 minutes.
We'll try and fit in as many questions as we can during that time.
If you'd like to come on stage and ask a question, please raise your hand.
And I'll bring as many of you and say, just possible.
Please be ready to get straight to the question.
Also, don't chill any project projects or ask any other,
or add in any unnecessary details.
Like I said, we don't have much time, so we'll try and keep this sufficient as possible.
I'll also try and go in order of when people are added on stage as well.
So if you do get added, just take note of that so you can expect when your question is next to.
Oh, looks like CZ here. Hey CZ, how you doing?
Hey guys, how are you?
Great. So we just done the intro, bringing on a couple people now, so we'll get started.
Sure. I'm making it. Run you a tweet now.
Perfect. Tudor, are you there? Do you want to go ahead?
Good morning, everyone. First of all, I want to say I'm actually really excited to have CZ here to answer a few questions of mine.
So just without really any suggestions, I just want to ask, recently we've seen Binance coming together in collaboration with Nangira with Cryptocurrency View.
And just yesterday the board of advisory was released and the format in one of Nangira was among the list.
So CZ, what does this mean for the future of Cryptocurrency in Nangira?
And I don't think you're anytime soon in Nangira just to push adoption in Nangira.
Sure. Yeah, well, it's good to speak to Tudor.
You know, we've been interacting out to Tudor for quite a while.
And yeah, I think first of all, the advisory board, it's, well, and how things are going in that way.
I think crypto needs to work with traditional financial institutions.
We need to be compliant. We need to integrate.
We don't need to be completely separated from that.
Today 99.9% on money still still ifiat.
So in order to move that money into crypto, we need to integrate.
So and also Binance, the centralized exchange, Binance.com is probably the most scrutinized organization on the planet.
Every regular in every country is looking at it very intently.
It's, it's a lot of pressure, but it's also a lot of opportunity.
We can set the example of being the most compliant exchange and we can communicate with regulators.
We can give them confidence.
So having that advisory board with people with very strong backgrounds is going to help us.
So the advisory board is one thing.
And there's many things that happens underneath behind the scenes.
We have very large teams that that works on the compliance efforts.
So we want to set example to be the leading.
We're not only the largest exchange.
We're also the most compliant.
And today, Binance have the most licenses around the world.
So we have France, Italy, Spain, Dubai, Bahrain, many other places.
We also have 44 licenses in the United States.
A Binance US has them.
So that's kind of the general direction where we're going.
And that's why the global advisory board is extremely senior.
Extremely, very relatively extremely experienced people, extremely credible people, relatively high profile.
So that's important.
For Nigeria, I do plan to visit.
I was actually going to plan to visit some time ago, but other trips keep getting the trip schedule keep changing.
I don't know my exact schedule yet, but I will definitely try to make an effort there.
Nigeria is an important market for crypto and for us.
So yeah, I've been to Africa four times this year, but hopefully I'll make it to Nigeria soon.
Great. Thanks for the question, Trudeau. Vegas, your next see that.
Hi guys.
Thank you for having me.
So I just have a quick question to see the regarding the Luna classic burn on the spot trading.
So you left comments on the long ago on Twitter saying for us to implement it on Shane.
Before we start talking about implementing on the on the sex itself.
So we did that.
We still think into to support more of the community regarding this aspects.
All of this being said in the of the community.
I have to say thank you for for supporting the community in so many other ways as well.
Thank you guys.
Sure. Thanks for the question.
And so Luna, Luna classic is an interesting situation.
So I didn't make the comment. I think the block should implement the burn first,
but I did not promise saying that right afterwards, by now, we'll do X, Y, and Z.
I did not do that, but that people may imply that or infer that.
I can see where that's coming from.
But the centralized exchanges have different, what have considerations.
If you think about the game theory, right, you sure everybody wants everybody else to burn 1.2% per transaction.
But any, but from a user perspective, if finance charges 1.2% fees per transaction,
we're not going to burn very much. I can tell you basically no one's going to trade on finance.
It's very similar to certain countries implementing a 1.2% tax per transaction.
Guess what? Those exchanges in those countries, the volume goes to zero or very close to zero.
So by centralized exchanges, unless we can get all the centralized exchanges in the world to do this,
it's not going to work.
So any exchange that implements 1.2% transactions per transaction.
This is not going to be a trading volume. You trade 50 times, you have zero.
So,
and there's no way to collectively organize all the exchanges in the world to do it at the same time.
So that's the thing where on the blockchain, you can implement it at a protocol level.
Anybody who wants to use that protocol will have to pay that.
To be honest, the 1.2% burn will make use cases on the blockchain kind of meaningless.
Sorry for my directness because, look, if Ethereum charges 1.2% fee,
nobody's going to use it. If Bitcoin charges 1.2% fee, not that many people's going to use it.
So it's actually going to make that blockchain less useful.
But that blockchain was not, was kind of abandoned by the project team anyway.
So for us, we already support in LunaC and we want to continue to support it.
But we don't want to be in a situation where we won't be able to support it.
And we don't want to be in a situation where everybody else just, you know,
if we try to 1.2%, no one, no one, and no other exchanges don't do it at the same time.
No one's going to trade on Binance. So we're not going to, we're not going to help very much.
So that's my view. I will try to clarify that in some writing.
But if you think about, if you think through that, that's basically the implication.
And also this voting mechanism, if you have a bunch of people who are not involved, vote on something.
And they don't have the, they don't have the ability to enforce that globally.
The voting is somewhat meaningless. So you can vote on the blockchain.
And then the blockchain does it. Okay, everybody uses the blockchain doesn't.
But today I can vote for all centralized exchanges to charge zero fees, period.
Everybody will vote yes. But can we implement it? Probably not.
So the voting, I think that community voting shows what the community wants, which is important.
But there are interesting implications on the execution and the execution and the side effects of it,
so that's kind of my view. I could be wrong. Yeah.
All right. Great. Thanks for the insight. That's easy. Let's move over to.
So if not there, we'll go to next in line, which is I mean, I mean either.
Hello.
Hey, everyone. And really happy to see that these AMAs are organized in a very, very good manner.
Okay. And the level of discussion is really good. So really, really good thing here.
Quick questions. Yeah. I mean, I'm one of the basically the exchanges that started just after you probably like two months ago.
Unfortunately, two months after you launched Binance, but unfortunately, I failed.
Okay. And and that's been basically following this immense group that Binance has been having a little bit invasely, but at the same time,
it benefits the whole environment, et cetera.
The the Gansler came up and said, basically, they are convinced that the crypto space is concentrated in few players.
And it's much more concentrated than the people think.
And obviously, they're talking about you and they're talking about the people that are basically leading this environment.
Okay.
My question to you is what's what's the future plan in order to make a kind of Binance less of a heavy weight,
because otherwise, it starts to become a big risk on the industry.
Today, Binance, for example, is based out of the UAE. Obviously, that's that's for some people are are are are security are is is a positive statement,
but some people see it as a risk basically, Binance is getting too big at which point by this is getting way too big and becoming a systemic risk on the environment.
Thank you.
Okay. So again, I think there's a lot of.
Binance is there. There's a lot to unpack.
First of all, thanks for the positive comments about Binance and I think Binance became successful because we did things.
Well, because we did things well and we protected users. We had decent product with decent servers and we had very strong values on how to protect our users and our actions kind of demonstrated that.
Regarding concentration and centralization, et cetera, I think you know this topic is being discussed many times almost every time I do an AMA this this topic can come up.
So natural network effects that makes successful businesses successful platforms, even successful protocols become more popular.
And you know, if you look at Ethereum is a very popular network, even though the fees are very high, people still use it quite actively for Binance.com, we would build we build a very easy to use exchange that secure that we protect our users.
And the changes liquidity has a very strong network effect.
So because we have the global we have a we have a large pool of we have the best liquidity in the world and we have we have a big chunk of the global liquidity trading on Binance is much cheaper is much safer than training other places.
If you imagine let's split the Binance liquidity into a thousand different exchanges so each exchange less average only has one 1000s of the liquidity.
It's much easier for a well to move the price on any of one of those exchanges and you will have the well can drive the price down and drive the price back.
You will be a big spike.
When those kind of spikes or what we call needles happen guess what people gets liquidated in that process if that other exchanges or that exchange offers futures.
So today having a global liquidity is actually the best protection mechanism we have for our users.
So whenever there are many regulators who ask us to split liquidity by country, we always tell them that's a bad that's a really bad idea for people in your country.
Because you know if we split if we split the liquidity 200 different ways.
Again, we have less liquidity each and we will not have a lot of level of protection.
So naturally people want to trade on a place where they have the we have the deepest liquidity and this less slippage so that when you buy or sell you get better prices you save money.
Slipage is actually more expensive than fees.
So people actually willing to pay a fee on exchange with less slippage.
So that's just on the liquidity side and then if you think about security.
Today we invest billions of dollars into security.
We hire the best people. We buy the best tools.
We have the best monitoring systems all of this.
All of this need to operate a scale.
If we are small exchange, we will not be able to spend.
I would even say 10 one billion.
We will not even be able to spend like 10 million 100 million.
We will not be able to spend on security.
On security investments or spending.
Then guess what?
That change will be less secure.
So all of these things.
There's an economy of scale here that the stronger the bigger ones you get bigger and so that that plays.
At the same time we do so often as you said the risk of a system massive failure than increases too.
So we should have multiple crypto exchanges in the space.
Today there are thousands or tens of thousands of exchanges in the space.
We actually invested in many other both centralized and decentralized exchanges.
We actually want to promote like so this is why we almost never try to push or destroy other centralized exchanges.
We actually encourage them to grow.
We invest in them.
But there is natural forces that make the bigger ones bigger.
That's just a network effect at play.
And in every industry, in every economy that happens to an extent.
Later on when the centralized party gets too big.
And when they become slow, when they become irresponsible to their users, when they no longer protecting their users, then that opens doors for new startups for new players to come in and take that away.
So today we still very focused on providing the best user experience and the best user service.
And when we do that, we'll get bigger.
And if we do that better than other people, they will get bigger.
So there's natural competition in a free market, in a decentralized market.
Network effects do come into play.
So at the same time we're investing very heavily in decentralized protocols, decentralized efforts.
And also if you look at the Binance ecosystem outside the centralized exchange, everything competes a little bit on its own and with each other.
So for example, Binance.com lists B&B-Chain Ethereum, many hundreds of other blockchains.
And we're not just promoting the B&B-Chain yet alone.
B&B-Chain gets listed on other centralized exchanges.
And CoinMarketCap services, a couple thousand other exchanges.
So each one are happy to work with competitors or peers of that of different parts in the ecosystem.
So we promote that kind of open ecosystem. That's the best we can do.
So yeah, so eventually I do see that this space should be there should be multiple centralized exchanges as they are today.
But hopefully some of the other ones do do become more prominent.
There should be more, there will be many, many decentralized exchanges and we're investing very heavily in that too.
So yeah, we'll see how the ecosystem grows.
All right, I think that answers that. Thanks for that question. Let's move on RD.
Your next, do you want to go ahead?
It's easy. It's easy.
Thanks for the opportunity that we speak. It's my pleasure.
I was just going to have a quick question. You mentioned it one time.
The problem is having what is to store your crypto assets and having to store your keys and having to give that to someone you choose.
So I was going to add those bananas. I've been in the press on creating what is because as you all know, millions of users trust by dance.
So do you have any chance on creating what that would be safer for crypto users to use and more advanced in storing our five big keys.
So that my question. Thank you.
Okay, sorry. You do have a little bit of an accent. So you your question is about wallets, right?
Yeah, exactly. That way I will.
Okay, okay.
So, so how do you how to hold your crypto is a fairly long elaborate topic.
There's centralized exchanges that I can use that's your own wallets that you can use. There's mobile wallets. There's hardware wallets.
There are other multi six solutions. There's right host signature solutions, etc.
So there's quite a lot of different.
There's paper wallets. So there's many different solutions that's available.
There's no one size fit all solution depends on how technical you are.
How comfortable are you with know backing up your own private key.
Storing in multiple places. Are you familiar with encrypting a USB drive.
Do you have let's say something?
Eventually we all pass away. So when that happens, I do have a way to give that to your kids before before that happens.
Oh, when that happens or after that happens.
So how to take care of all of those things and how and fundamentally how much money you're dealing with.
You know, if you're dealing with a small amount of spending money, say, you know, it's $10 or a couple hundred dollars.
It's not a big deal that that's probably fine. But if that if that amount of money is is life changing for you, then you got to you got to take care.
You got to do quite a number of other things to to secure it.
So yeah, so I actually do recommend people to learn how to secure both centralized exchanges.
If change accounts and also your own wallets.
Get if you story any meaningful amount of crypto on your own, get a hardware wallet.
Look into encryption solutions and yeah, that's quite a lot to learn.
I don't think there's one single best approach.
And if you're an institution, then you should look at custody solutions which today mostly use multi-sick or a threshold signatures, which require multiple people to sign, etc.
So there are that's a big topic.
But just last bit of advertising if it's not a huge amount of life changing money, then trust wallet, which is a very easy to use mobile wallet is a fantastic choice.
So it's very secure.
But again, you have to keep your phone relatively secure and not lose your phone, etc.
So yeah, there are many different choices. I won't be able to say like no one solution is better than everybody else.
Trust wallet is here, so yeah, it's on the screen.
Great. Yeah, I'll just add to that and show Binance Academy in the blog and say that we've got a lot of resources on there for wherever you are on the spectrum from needing a hot wallet to hardware wallet or anything else.
We can also get a tweet out later to refresh your mind with those resources too.
Okay, you're a guest, should you be there?
So first of all, I'm a big fan of you and Binance, like best customer service by far.
So my question is what advice would you give to young blockchain developers to get a job in Binance and like what things do you look for? Thank you.
Okay, so well, first of all, you got to be good at the technical skills.
But if a developer, you got to be able to write code and it's in this space is much easier if you can point to some GitHub repository of code that you wrote before, your contributions on open source projects, etc.
If you've done that, then fantastic.
And so there's a technical aspect to it.
And then for Binance, we look for people who are passionate about crypto.
So Binance structures ourselves as providing access for people to crypto. We're not just a centralized exchange.
We have the whole ecosystem, we have trust wallet, we have CoinMarketCab, we have a number of open block, open public blockchance, etc.
So we want people who are passionate about this industry.
Other exchanges may have different philosophies. There may be more money driven, there may be more trading driven, they're going back to stock trading or they're doing other things.
We're doing more blockchain development. We're doing Binance Pay, Binance Card, all of this are crypto enabling technologies.
So what I find is people who are very passionate typically do a much better job at Binance.
And also because we work majority remotely, very heavy majority remotely.
You can work in any country, any city, you don't have to come to the office, say for a few very regulatory related roles.
So we need people who are very passionate, who are self motivated, motivated to join us.
So that's the thing we usually look for.
All right. Thanks for Daniel.
Hey guys. Daniel here speaking. I'm CZ BigFine. You do great job for the space in terms of pushing adoption.
So really respect you on that front. My question was with a prompt when you try to use Luna on the platform.
And it's a reason that the South Korean court has a warrant out for like the co-founder of Luna with that kind of message slapped on the platform.
I mean, which is actually correct. But what do you think that does for the space at large when there's a bunch of people who even in Congress recently someone said that
a large cryptocurrency like Bitcoin is a decentralized one this scheme. So what does that do for sentiment generally speakers?
So, okay. Well, there's a few different things here. I think for Luna, you know, the blockchain was all was it?
blockchain from 2018. I don't know the details of the published
a rest of DoQuan, the search words, or whatever. I don't know the details of that, to be honest,
I did not look into that very that closely. I'm not sure if it's related to how he handled
certain situations or how he communicated with certain people, users, etc. I'm not sure
or the mishandling of the Luna USD issue or something broader. I don't really know to be very frank.
So far as far as I know, there's no published information making Luna
itself illegal to hold, etc. That's the information that I have. Luna was listed on Binance
a long, long time ago. So we and the number of users using that, having Luna is actually quite high.
And you can look at the LunaC request. You can see that that community is pretty active.
We go by community numbers. If something is used by a large number of users and we already
supported, we can't just abruptly not support it. And if we do, it actually hurts a lot of users.
So that's part of the protecting users' philosophy that we have to keep.
Based on my understanding, all the arrest warrant, etc. is specifically targeted at one person
who was a figurehead, a leader for the project, but not the project is an open source project,
is an open blockchain. So that's my understanding. With other people making comments,
saying big coins doesn't big coins that has always been the case for the last 12, 13 years.
There's many skeptics. To be honest, many of the skeptics actually makes the community stronger.
When the communities attack, when big coins attack, the guys were OGs of big coins.
The guys who believe big coins actually binds together stronger.
And we as a community actually, you know, will continue to push it.
So different views is good. Some skeptical views actually keep everything in check,
and keep the industry healthier. And just like some dips actually keep the industry healthier.
But so those negative opinions usually doesn't so far, has not dampened the adoption rate
of the people's beliefs in crypto.
For that, on that topic, I highly encourage people to not change your views just because some
other guys said something emotional or sensational or an opinion. Understand the fundamentals
and decide if you like it. If you look at big coin, it's limited supply. It's permissionless.
You can use the big coin network as long as you follow the big coin protocol.
No one can prevent you from sending a transaction.
So yeah, if those properties are valuable to you, then great. If those valuable properties are
not valuable to you, then don't use it. But don't let some guys or opinions change your opinion.
I think that would be naive. So and to be honest, the more overall, the more people who talk about
big coin even if it's somewhat negative, it actually just makes the message spread more.
So you actually more coverage. So the CEO of a large bank talking about big coin even though
slightly negative, he's still talking about big coin. And more and more people are hearing about
big coin. So yeah, so I think, of course, we want to see more positive comments ideally,
but different people have different views. And that's perfectly fine. But for most people, I encourage
from your own views by looking at the fundamentals.
All right, well, we've got a few minutes left. Two people left on stage. So they should work out well.
crypto Jones, you were here first. So please go ahead.
I yeah, thanks for having me as an honor to be able to speak. And the question I have is currently
that at the moment there's an official BNB chain community which is focused heavily on defy.
I was just wondering, we've liked the recent listen of projects like Rareboards, which is an NFT
market aggregate, which are accepted into the most valuable build a program.
Is there any like focus from Binance to maybe look at like a BNB chain NFT community and
what are your thoughts on the BNB chain NFT is really? And lastly, is there the Binance that's ever
going to come to the UK? And that's my question. Okay, this is a few different questions there.
Yeah, so there is a fairly active community around BNB chain. To be honest, our role
is really just provide support, provide funding and provide encouragement. Sometimes, you know,
we tweet for them, what we retweet them, get them exposure. So I do know Binance,
there's a special phone actually just focused on BNB chain projects investing and
not just investment. Like sometimes they're just grants. You know,
there's a little bit of money just to develop something and to help small developer groups.
Sometimes it's incubations. There's multiple incubation seasons and
what I heard from them while I was going is they're going to increase the speed of that.
Have more incubation projects, incubation programs going on. So each incubation,
I think the number I saw was the last incubation season that they got like 800 applications.
They choose 16 projects. So incubation, investments, etc. And NFT is one of those things that,
you know, each season there's multiple projects around the NFT area that's being built.
NFT markets going through a correction by most reasonable means. But I still believe that
the use cases are not just selling JPEGs. There's so many more use cases for NFTs that we have
not even built. So hopefully those will get built and NFTs as a technology will continue to
grow and flourish. Lastly, on the UK, so we do have a team that's working actively
for UK. We are in the process of together with other jurisdictions.
We are looking to explore to acquire licenses, apply for licenses. We have communications with
regulators and different agencies. But UK went through quite a bit of turmoil in the past
was a while, right? So there was the Prime Minister change and then there was the sadness of
the Queen passing away. So some of those efforts are a little bit slow but we are working on it.
All right. And then Marcus, thanks for waiting until the end. Please go ahead.
Hey, easy, great to connect. By we have a direction, my name is Marcus. I'm a fellow at the Ethereum
Foundation where we are essentially exploring how we can onboard the next billion users,
particularly in emerging economies. I really love how much finance has pushed the needle on
really onboarding users, particularly in emerging economies. But we'd love to get your thoughts on
one, what are the key roadblocks and barriers you see to reaching widespread adoption and
onboarding those next billion. And two, also, we'd love to connect with the Binance team and have
a more in-depth conversation and basically putting together an open source research proposal to
publish this out to the wider community and propose some building efforts to accelerate that
adoption. But yeah, thanks again for the space and look at 40-union answers.
Sure. Yeah, so let's have our team reach out to you after this to explore the collaboration
front. And on the question, so for Binance, we, it's very important for us for mass adoption.
We prioritize that much more over-profit targeting high-income regions, high revenue regions,
etc. So this is why I personally visited Africa four times this year. I was in Latin
for like a month and a half. And I visited Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina,
and a few other countries, and El Salvador. And so we just want to help people to access crypto,
whether that's high profit or not. That's a secondary consideration. In the last developed
parcel of the world, there's pros and cons. For example, in Africa, the banking penetration is
probably about 11 percent today. So only 11 percent of the population have bank accounts.
It's actually might not be a minus because while people can just use a smartphone and smartphone
penetration is increasing at exponential speed. People can just use a smartphone and then deal
with crypto, deal with blockchain, and they have access to financial products, they have access to
payments, they have access to remittances, transfers, all of these things are available to them now.
Typically in this less developed parts of the world, education is really, really important.
They are a higher percentage of illiteracy. So education is really important. Sometimes it's not
not about blockchain. Sometimes it's even about how to use the internet, how to use technologies,
very simple stuff. So, Binance have multiple educational programs, Binance Academy,
Binance Masterclass, and we launched the Binance Scholarship program and we've Binance
Interim programs with different universities and educational institutions. For also in Africa,
we help to build more than 100 schools in Africa. And those are just normal elementary
high schools, not just not blockchain schools. So, yeah, so we're doing all of that. And also lastly,
well not lastly, and very importantly, we also have to work very closely with governments.
We can't just do this alone. So, this is why I fly to many different countries with
mid- with head of states, senior politicians to push this. Usually those conversations are very
high level, to be very frank. Usually it's okay, we embrace blockchain from the present of a country.
And that's usually enough because at that level, that kind of signaling is helpful for the
industry to grow. And like not to be arrogant, luckily today, in the industry, I think I'm one of the
very few people who have that level of access. When I go to a new country, I can typically ask,
hey, would it be rude to meet with a president or the prime minister, etc. The answer is usually
no. The answer is usually fine. Well, well, well, well, help you do a range of meetings.
And I think that do help the industry to grow. So, I spend quite a lot of my time doing that,
which is actually not that exciting. So, but yeah, so in all of those places,
that's what we do on the, on the, on the, what, what I call pushing front. But fundamentally,
though, we do need to make the products easier to use. So, we got to make it easier for people,
for normal people to be able to hold cryptocurrency securely using a simple devices. So, today,
the topic is I just mentioned, like, how do you do backups of private keys? How do you
make sure that your kids can get on me if you're not around? So, those kind of things are quite
difficult to do today for a normal person. So, how do we make centralized exchanges more secure,
easier to use and centralized changes solve a lot of those problems. But still, many people's
computers get hacked. How do we make computers more secure? How do we have less viruses, etc.
So, all of those things are actually important for adoption. So, we got to make the tools
easier for people to use. Yeah, so that's, that's in your nutshell, everything we, a lot of,
a few of the things we do. Yeah, so I think we target, we target to do this AMA once a month,
30 minutes each. We'll go over, we went over by a few minutes targeting about 10 also questions.
So, thank you so much for everyone for joining and we'll do this very frequently.
Great. Yeah, thanks a lot, Sezy. And apologies to everyone with a hand up that we didn't get to.
I try my best to remember who asked questions last time so we get different people on each time.
So, look forward to seeing you again next month. So, hopefully you can get your question in front of
Sezy. All right, thanks everyone. Have a good weekend.
Thanks guys.
