They certainly were nice looking roofs, but if a few solar panels on your roof,
if the aesthetics of it are going to be the thing that makes you mind up,
then they might not be for you in the first place.

You know, it's not a big deal.
It was a smaller project.
Well, it was kind of the tariffs that were the final nail in the coffin,
because the solar cells that they used in the solar roof came from China.
So I think we've got like 100% tariff on Chinese solar now.
So the economics were already dubious.
You know, the solar roof was proposed in 2016 to help get people excited
about the Tesla solar city merger.
Solar city was basically out of cash and they ended up winding down most of solar
city.
Tesla sells solar panels still obviously, but the sort of financing offers they had
where they would pay for the solar system for you and you would just pay monthly price
from the solar city days that's long gone and they're no longer selling in home depot
and stuff like that.
They're just selling directly online.
So Tesla started making their own solar cells actually here in the United States in Buffalo.
And those retrofit solar panels are sort of what they're going with going forward.
So even before the tariffs, if you sort of expect out a solar roof versus a solar panel
system.
You would see like the solar roof system was like multiple times the cost of getting
solar retrofit and solar retrofit wasn't cheap either, right?
So basically you had to be made of money to get one of these things.
And one of my neighbors has one actually, it looks really nice, but yeah, for most people,
they didn't need to buy a new roof.
So having to buy a whole roof and then the fact that houses were very much different,
right?
So the fact that it's not something you can just sort of mass produce in a factory.
Every house has a little bit of a different roof and a little bit of a different slant
and that just made it even more complicated.
Yeah, you need a specialist in each area and like how many are they installing, right?
So I mean, that's complicated.
They needed to be specially trained.
So basically it was already insanely expensive before the tariffs, after the 100% tariff,
it was just like, okay, this is literally nobody's buying this.
I mean, of the Tesla fans in this room, how many of us bought a solar roof?
None of us, right?
Some of us probably have solar panels, but not the solar roof.
So it was actually a really cool product.
I love the idea of solar panels that just look like an ordinary roof, but they just weren't
able to make the economics work.
So I can already hear it as the Tesla SpaceX merger comes up.
People are going to be bringing up this solar roof.
Oh, yeah, you merged with solar city.
You said everyone was going to have solar roofs.
But yeah, SpaceX is not solar city.
It's not a failing business in need of cash.
But sometimes it's good to just let something die.
You try something out.
Hopefully you try out a lot of cool things.
Some of them are going to work.
Some of them aren't going to work.
And I think it makes sense to focus on the new solar cells they're making here in the
United States, rather than the ones they were importing from China.
Now that we're in this new tariff reality.
I think this might not be dead for all future going forward.
I mean, I can see a future where you have either like optimists or like purpose built
robot that can install this.
We'd combine it with like like drones or whatever you can maybe you can scan the roof,
like penetrating.
Yeah, any day now optimist is going to be for sale and good enough to install something
on your roof.
I'm not going to install a new roof on your house.
Yeah, I'm talking in the future, right?
This might make you come back.
You never know.

I think this roof could make a part, you know, version two come back at some point.
I mean, there's solar factories being huge.
I can see it coming back, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to be under the Tesla
brand.
I think this is a project that if someone else wants to take on, I'm sure that someone
else might try, but I mean, let's be real.
The S&E X got retired.
The fact that the solar roof made it longer than they did, it's kind of surprising.
This is an ancillary product.
It's not a money maker for them.
It's a whole lot of trouble.
They're trying to streamline to the most important products they offer, getting rid of
this at this point in time makes perfect sense.
What if some company just agreed with some new builders?
They just put them on houses and they had it streamlined and everything.
I don't know.
There's places where it could maybe work.
Solar panels work for me.
I got them and I love them and I love driving on sun and keeping my house cool on the
sun with the sun.
It's amazing.
Yeah, but you didn't get a solar panel.
You got solar panels, right?
Yeah, they look great.
Yeah, I don't mind the look either, but you know, you got the product that makes the
most sense is efficient, you know, is cost effective.
It's just they couldn't get it there.
So you know, they have a product that does the same thing better for cheaper.
Why keep it around?
Yeah, I only hope that the current owners, they still can access like spare parts and
like service on the roof because that would be you sit there with this expensive roof
and that was something breaks.
It's like sorry, we don't do that anymore.
Call someone else, you know, but usually like companies keep spare parts for many years.
So that shouldn't be an issue.

No, I hadn't really even thought about it.
That's fair.
I guess.
Well, to be honest, the whole concept of rooftop solar has like become a lot less attractive.
I mean, if you just sort of do the math, like take the emotion out of it because I would
love to be generating clean energy at my house and generating my own energy on site.
But does it actually make financial sense?
Are you actually saving money?
The answer is really dubious.
In most cases, no.
It's a lot cheaper to just buy, you know, from your utility every month than to invest,
you know, $20,000, $40,000 in a solar system for your house.
And the emergence of like utility scale solar, it is so much cheaper to build utility scale
solar, meaning you take some field or something and just put a bunch of panels in it.
You can get down to like two cents a kilowatt hour or a lower.
When you get into houses, you're individually permitting every house and getting individualized
construction for that house and arguing with the HOA, arguing with the utility on a house
by house basis, all to get a teeny tiny amount of solar.
Whereas for these utility scale projects, you get to permit once and boom, now you've
got this huge solar area.
So the economics actually favor giant solar production sites and then just delivering
it to people through the ordinary utility.
More so than, you know, people putting their own installations on their home.
You can do it maybe to, you know, feel good or know you're using all clean energy, but
it's not necessarily going to save you money on electricity, at least not, you know,
in the first year, maybe with the way electricity prices are rising it will.
It's good for the preppers.
People who want to be, you know, it's good if you want to be self-sufficient, if you
get a battery backup and everything or you're off-grid or something or, you know, I got
them.
I like the, I don't know, I just felt right to me.
I think it's, I like it, you know.
So I just spend my money on it and, yeah.
I'm always limited for that reason, but it's funny as, you know, now I'm looking at it
and solar is becoming less attractive to me and battery storage is becoming more.
I have time of use rates around me and I'm looking at it now.
Yeah.
I can skip the solar, just get the batteries with auto-bitter and probably be more
cost-effective than a whole system.

Lincoln, there's actually a cool option now available in Utah.
Are you familiar with the plug-in solar program?
No.
So, eco-flow has launched an inverter that's like 300 bucks on sale right now and it
does up to four panels, 1200 watts.
So you could just go out and buy some $97 panels.
You're into it for under a thousand bucks.
It's authorized now in Utah and like four other states, maybe California, it's in legislations
and second committee.
You basically just plug them in, put them in your backyard or slap them on your deck
or whatever and plug it in your outside outlet and that's it.
No permit.
That's cool.

So here in Texas, we have unregulated utilities.
So I have a friend that gets free electricity at night.
He loads his batteries up at night and then he runs them all day long and he's cut his
electric bill in half just by using his batteries.
So he went from like $500 a month because there's a pool in the big house to like half
of that just by running his batteries.
Yeah, my price overnight is $0.10 a kilowatt hour here in New Jersey during peak hours
of 4 p.m.
The 9 p.m.
It's $0.67 a kilowatt hour.
So if I could charge that battery up at night and then use it during peak hours, I'd
be saving myself a boatload.
Yeah, my parents just recently got power walls with no solar.
